TRANSYLVANIA

19 -25 September 2024

Copsa Mare, Transylvania, Romania

A unique opportunity to study botanical art in the wonderful setting of rural Transylvania, surrounded by ancient forests and traditional farm grasslands.

Suitable for, experienced beginners and improvers, this workshop gives you the opportunity to explore and study the native flora, experience local life and advance your botanical art skills in a peaceful and relaxed setting. With a dedicated studio space and only six places you will receive tuition tailored to your particular needs.

WORKSHOP

Subjects covered may include:

    • Stages of producing a botanical illustration.

    • Collection and observation of subjects.

    • Making initial records.

    • Painting techniques for botanical art.

    • Composition considerations.

    • Finishing touches etc.

Each day will be a mix of intensive study, fresh air, exercise, good food & wine. You need to be relatively fit, as we will be walking up hills and over uneven ground to see plants in their natural habitat. We will also take inspiration from the Transylvania Florilegium (No. 19/150 is owned by our host.)

ACCOMMODATION

Rachel and James de Candole, our hosts, have restored the former town hall in Copsa Mare, ( above left) originally built in the 1890s. This is now their family home and where we are based. We will eat meals together of fresh local produce (vegetarians and vegans catered for) including being hosted in the surrounding villages for a couple of the evenings.

PRICE

2250 EUR which includes six nights accommodation, food and wine, airport transfers, five days botanical art instruction.

TRANSYLVANIA FLORILEGIUM

FDA131F9-505B-4C1F-837B-E12115088EBF_edited.jpg

I first visited Transylvania in 2014, when I was fortunate to be amongst a select group of worldwide botanical artists invited by Helen Allen to take part in the Transylvania Florilegium project, depicting the native flora.

It was an amazing experience and I'd love to share a similar adventure with you!
